Al Iaquinta continued to open up eyes on Saturday night with an impressive knock out win over Joe Lauzon. Just two days later the Serra Longo fighter all ready knows his next match up. News broke last night that Iaquinta will take on Jorge Masvidal at UFC Fight Night 63 on April 4th. The fight will be at The Patriot Center in Fairfax Virginia.
The opportunity for Iaquinta developed quickly. Saturday night after UFC 183 it was announced that Masvidal’s opponent Benson Henderson would be moving up to welterweight to fight Brandon Thatch. This opened up the door for Iaquinta to step in. Originally many thought Donald Cerrone would get the call, but it will be Iaquinta meeting Masvidal in the Co Main event in April. The event is headlined by Ricardo Lamas vs. Chad Mendes.
After his win agaisnt Joe Lauzon on Saturday night Iaquinta enters the fight riding a three fight win streak. “Raging” Al recorded wins over Rodrigo Damm, Ross Pearson, and Lauzon, all by way of TKO. Masvidal enters the bout with three straight wins of his own beating Pat Healy, Iaquinta’s former TUF teammate Daron Cruickshank, and James Krause.
Yet another big opportunity for Iaquinta agaisnt a top ranked opponent in the light weight division. Iaquinta continues to climb the ranks himself. UFC’s official rankings currently have Iaquinta #15 in the light weight division after his win on Saturday. His next opponent Masvidal is ranked #13. Sit tight Iaquinta Nation, it’s going to be another war in Virginia on April 4th.
